Air Pollution Crisis: No Indian City Breathed Easy in a Decade

A shocking new study reveals what many of us already suspected: breathing clean air in India’s major cities has been a pipe dream for the last decade. The decade-long study, ending in November 2025, paints a grim picture – not a single major Indian city consistently met safe air quality standards during that period.

Delhi, unfortunately, takes the top spot as the most polluted, but it’s not alone. Other major urban centers also consistently recorded unhealthy Air Quality Index (AQI) levels. The usual suspects are to blame: vehicular emissions, rampant industrial pollution, and seasonal crop burning. These factors are worsened by geographical conditions and shifting weather patterns, trapping pollutants and creating toxic air cocktails.

What can be done? It’s a complex problem requiring a multi-pronged approach. Stricter emission controls for vehicles and industries are a must. We also need sustainable agricultural practices to curb crop burning.
